With everything going on in the world, have you ever taken a step back and wondered if there are places where people live the longest and have the least amount of disease, stress, and illnesses?
I do not doubt that many of you have pondered this thought a time or two. Whether you are a woman or man, mother or father, wife or husband, all you truly want is the best for yourself and your family.
Am I right?
But let me tell you, you’re in luck! There is such a place! There are five places on earth!
These five incredible places on earth have been deemed as the blue zones which have been established by twenty years of extensive research.
I wish more people knew about the blue zones since so much research has gone into finding these unique pockets throughout the world!
Who founded the blue zones?
The blue zones were founded by Mr. Dan Buettner who has a life of accomplishments in the area of nutrition and wellness. He is an internationally recognized researcher, explorer, and New York Times bestselling author and National Geographic Fellow.
With extensive research over his lifetime, Dan Buettner has found five places around the world that are compiled together to make the blue zones.
What are the blue zones?
With the help of National Geographic (which I love) and much research, Dan Buettner discovered 5 places around the world where people live the longest and healthiest lives. These have been now called the blue zones.
The blue zones paints a clear picture that an unprocessed diet might actually be the solution to many junk food temptations and underlying health issues.
In these particular areas, living to 100 years or older without disease is pretty normal.
This being said, highly processed food and junk food is a complete addiction. It is so hard to get away from.
The vast majority of humans eat at least 3 times per day. Therefore, we should be eating proper clean food so our bodies can thrive.
I’ve always loved the way we can compare our bodies to a vehicle.
Check it out: A vehicle runs on fuel which powers the engine. Every time we drive up to a fuel station, we have to decide on the quality and type of fuel we want to pump into our fuel tank. This will determine how efficiently the engine runs.
This is the same concept for us! The quality and type of food we decide to eat are broken down into different nutrients by our bodies. If we eat foods that are highly processed with hardly any nutrients, our bodies will not run optimally. We need the right balance of nutrient-rich foods to fuel our bodies so we can thrive.
This being said it is so hard to live in a society that sells food that is riddled with chemicals, preservatives, sugar, and additives.
My family and I try so hard to run the other way from it. Generally speaking we eat very well. However, when other friends or family members don’t understand that healthy choices are extremely important, it can be a bit of a battle.
But the good news is when you start eating healthier foods, you feel healthier as well! It’s a disciplined choice that just ends up following you and your children around forever.
The temptation goes away when you decide to NOT eat that Mars bar or bag of chips, your immediate brain reaction is that you really crave it and want it. Eventually, after saying no many times, your brain understands.
BUT Believe me…. It is not easy!
It would make it much easier if you are living in one of these blue zone locations! But this is obviously not an option for so many people.

Many people are always looking for the newest way to lose weight, get in shape or dodge any type of disease (especially cancer).

Eat primarily plant based about 95-100%
Drink at least 7 glasses of water per day
Eat meat sparingly
Snack on nuts
Eat fiber rich whole foods
Eat beans everyday
Consume fish in small portions about 3 times per week
Eliminate as much added refined sugar as possible
Take dairy out of your diet as much as possible by only having it monthly instead of daily
Eat only sourdough bread or breads made with whole grain such as rye, barley and wheat

Creating daily solid habits to stick to, and choosing food that makes you feel great every day are the small steps you can take to thrive!
The best part is that you don’t have to live in Ikaria or Sardinia to benefit from wanting to try to be a centenarian.
The blue zones lifestyle is not a hidden secret, it is out there for everyone and anyone to embrace.
Perhaps it’s taking more walks, eating dinner with friends, or just slowing down a bit. It’s simple stuff, but it adds up big time.
