Save Money and Eat Healthy
You’re probably thinking that you can’t possibly eat healthily and save money at the same time, right?
I am here to tell you that you most definitely can!
Times are getting tougher and things are getting more expensive but by tweaking small habits into new ones you’ll be able to spread your hard-earned dollars a whole lot wider.
Try growing what you can in a garden. However, if planting your own garden is not possible then go to farmers’ markets and buy locally grown produce when it is in season. When you get home you have the option of storing it or freezing it.
This will be much easier on the pocketbook and is healthier.
It also gives you and your family control over what you are eating so you know where your food comes from.
The goal is to avoid many nasty unpronounceable ingredients, chemicals and pesticides.
You can do this very easily by cutting out as many pre-made foods and processed foods as possible. This is where you’ll spend a lot of your money.
The internet is the resource kingdom for anything recipe related!
Try looking for quick healthy recipes your family can make from scratch that don’t cost a fortune.
You will see, once you start making your food from scratch and with whole real food ingredients, you will have a hard time going back to processed food…. I promise!
It also helps to know that our tongues are the root of training our bodies to avoid certain foods. Our tongues appear to become more sensitive to fat and sugars when we reduce the amount we eat.
Food Prep and Time
Many of us struggle with time and food prep.
Do you find yourself sometimes staring into the pantry or fridge trying to figure out what to make for supper? I know I sure did! Creating a simple meal plan shouldn’t be hard. It just takes time to get in the habit of doing it and sticking to it.
Let’s be honest… who has hours to spend in the kitchen.
Unless you enjoy it. You’ve been gifted!
Starting SLOW on your family’s journey to becoming healthier is the way to go. Everyone is different and ALL families are living in different situations. Step by step you are on your way to strategically building a healthy lifestyle for yourself and your family!
Cookbooks
People might think that cookbooks or recipe books are a thing of the past but I guess I am old school and love a good old-fashioned book.
Check out these 5 essential cookbooks you absolutely need in your kitchen! The recipes will surpass your expectations for delicious ‘real’ food that doesn’t take hours to prepare.
1. Fraiche Living
Tori is a Registered Dietician who embraces the moderation and quality of food without deprivation. Her recipes have easy to follow instructions and recipe notes on the bottom for easy modifications if desired.
She offers a wide variety of delicious gluten-free, vegan and dairy-free options to make easy cooking.
Fraiche Living, is considered, in my family’s top healthy recipe books & blogs because she makes healthy food hassle-free and family-friendly.
Win Win in my book!!
There is also a huge variety on her blog but it is very well organized and a crisp clean blog that is easy to read.
2. Magnolia Table: A Collection OF Recipes For Gathering
Joanna Gaines is one busy mom, wife, and business owner but for some reason she makes it look effortless. You’ve most likely watched her TV series Fixer Upper.
Although not all of the recipes in her book are super “healthy”, they are homemade. And this is also something to take into consideration. No additives or preservatives!
I LOVE how almost every page has a photo of the dish you are preparing. If you are visual this is perfect
3. Mandy’s: Gourmet Salads
Mandy found her love for delicious salads and whole foods early in life which kick-started her journey as a restaurant owner. Now she has 3 restaurants based out of Montreal, Canada.
Her recipe is like a story about her journey and has photos of every dish to go with each recipe. (I love this since I am visual). There are a couple of sections in her book to make it super simple to find things (Salads, grain bowls, salad dressings, desserts, smoothies).
Her recipe book includes many of the recipes she uses in her restaurants.
It’s such a useful and pretty cookbook.
Tip**:Try buying squeeze bottles (these are my favorite). Decide what salad recipe you will want to eat that week and make the dressings ahead of time. Store them in the fridge in squeeze bottles to make it super easy at mealtime.
4. The Earth Diet
Liana Werner-Gray is a health and nutrition coach who lived much of her life in Australia before moving to the United States. She learned at a very young age, from the indigenous people, that by eating what the Earth provided it is easy to maintain your health and wellness.
Her recipe books have helped me conquer my addiction to sugar!
Since I have such a sweet tooth, I was afraid that by giving up granulated sugar I would never have that sweet taste again.
But, I was shocked at how many AMAZING sweet treat recipes were in her books. I’m talking brownies, cookie dough, cookie dough-filled peanut butter cups and so much more!
Her personal story and recipes are what inspired me and continue to inspire me to try my hardest at serving my family food and snacks without the use of sugar.
Conclusion
These are the books that have helped myself and my family succeed through nutrition. I keep researching everyday in order feed my brain with knowledge and to stay on top of new scientific findings. I hope you will find these very helpful!
